What we do

Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals have a long tradition of making significant medical breakthroughs and developing new treatments.

With our university partner, King's College London, we are one of only five National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) comprehensive Biomedical Research Centres.  These are centres that were chosen by the Department of Health's National Institute for Health Research in 2006 to receive funding for research.

The NIHR awarded us £51 million over five years to invest in areas of research where we will be able to expand understanding of diseases and make a real difference to patients.

Together with other local hospital and university partners, we’re studying everything from asthma in children and adults, to stem cell research, as well as basic biological studies in areas like genetics to try and understand what genes patients have that make them predisposed to diseases and how they respond to  treatments and medications we develop. You can find out more about our current research activities here.

Our aim is to find more effective ways to tackle major health problems ranging from obesity, heart disease and cancer to skin conditions, chronic inflammatory disorders, asthma and allergy and to bring these benefits to our patients as rapidly as possible.
